Calcite VS Clear Quartz
A common question we receive from our customers is “What’s the difference between calcite and quartz?” Both of them appear similar in regards to their appearance but let’s look at them a bit closer.
Quartz and calcite are common minerals around the world. Both minerals form in a variety of colours, such as purple, pink, white, brown, grey and transparent. However, these two minerals have many distinctively different physical and chemical properties that differentiate them.
The Key Difference – Mineral Hardness
Mineral hardness is a key characteristic that scientists use in sample identification. Quartz is approximately four times harder than calcite. A piece of quartz can scratch a piece of calcite, but calcite cannot scratch quartz. If you have a piece of each, try to scratch one piece with the other to observe the difference in the hardness.
Now, it is time to look at the different colours of calcite and their properties.
