About Orthoceras and Ammonite
Orthoceras (meaning “straight horn”) were ancient marine cephalopods that lived during the Devonian period, more than 400 million years ago. They were early ancestors of modern squid and octopus, recognised by their long, conical shells divided into chambers that helped them navigate the prehistoric seas.
Ammonites, in contrast, had coiled spiral shells and are believed to be relatives of modern-day nautiluses. Their distinctive spiral design symbolises change, evolution, and the cyclical nature of life.
Together, Orthoceras and Ammonite fossils represent growth, transformation, and the enduring history of life on Earth. Each fossil plate captures this incredible story — a tangible relic from the ancient oceans, preserved forever in stone.
